Proteus anguinus

This newt lives in Slovenia and Croatia. We think that it colonized subterranean environment during the Pliocene. This is the sole cave Vertebrates from Europe. It is blind and depigmented (whereas it repigments when it is exposed for a long time in light) and shows
typical neotenic characters (persistence of the gills, skeleton few calcified ...)
It reaches sexual maturity near 15 years old and can lives up to 80 years.

This species is studied and bred since 1952 in the cave of Moulis. This is still the sole place in the world where reproduction has occured.

We register now almost 200 individuals available for the scientific research, espacially on the evolution of species and adaptation.
